When support may help

  • Your child wants help joining or maintaining conversations that matter to them.
  • Misunderstandings make interactions with others difficult or frustrating.
  • Your child needs support asking for clarification, help, space, or a break.
  • Explaining preferences or communicating boundaries feels challenging.

Skills we may address

  • Starting and continuing conversations around shared interests.
  • Conversational reciprocity, with space for each person's contributions.
  • Exploring social situations and making communication expectations explicit.
  • Considering different perspectives when clinically appropriate and meaningful to your child.
  • Repairing misunderstandings, expressing preferences, and advocating for needs.

Different communication styles are valid. Support is neurodiversity-affirming and focuses on meaningful communication and self-advocacy. Eye contact, hiding autistic traits, and fitting arbitrary social rules are not therapy goals.

How online therapy works

Your SLP works with your child's interests and real-life priorities to select activities. Shared stories, discussion, and optional role-play can provide supported practice. Goals respect individual communication styles, and the level of participation and support is adjusted to your child.

Sessions typically last 30 minutes, with duration and frequency individualized to clinical needs. We discuss whether virtual therapy is a good fit and what adult support or technology your child may need.

Helping skills carry into everyday life

Parents can support progress by honoring requests and boundaries, modeling how to ask for clarification, and making room for preferred ways of communicating. Your SLP can help you identify practical changes that make everyday interactions more accessible.

If your child also needs help understanding words or organizing ideas, explore expressive and receptive language therapy.
