Have FUN WHILE LEARNING with this Describing and Making Inferences Digital unit. Explicit instruction is KEY and this lesson provides all the tools you need. It’s a comprehensive NO PREP, NO PRINT unit that explicitly teaches students how to describe using their five senses. It also includes other guiding questions to help students progress towards mastery.
This unit follows a progression of providing students with examples of adjectives that correspond to the sense of sight, smell, hearing, taste, and touch. Next, it moves on to identifying guiding questions to assist with making descriptions. Finally it concludes with a dedicated game style section for students to practice making inferences. It is very comprehensive and gives students multiple opportunities to practice.
Where can this lesson be used?
This unit displays nicely on a Smartboard for whole group instruction. It is great on tablets and iPads for small group. If you work remotely, this is an excellent option for speech teletherapy platforms. It is in the format of an INTERACTIVE PDF. The individual pages could be printed and would display nicely on a “Describing” bulletin board.
How can this lesson be used?
This is a great introductory lesson for students. It is also very effective to encourage them to be more expressive during oral and written expression by adding descriptive adjectives. It’s a great way to help guide their thinking process for writing with more vivid detail.
There are a variety of ways you can use this lesson. Once students are able to demonstrate an understanding, have them apply their knowledge by creating stations and allowing them to rotate around the room as they interact with and describe tangible objects. For teletherapy, a great application would be to have students bring tangible items for “show n tell” to describe to you or have you guess what they are describing without showing the item to the group.
Be creative and I hope you enjoy this Describing and Making Inferences lesson with your students as much as I do with mine.
